I.

Fastenings:

  1. Provide necessary fixings, fastenings, anchors, lugs, nails, screws, bolts, straps and the like of approved types, sufficient to transmit the loads and stresses imposed and ensure the rigidity of the assembly. Drill timbers for fastenings to prevent splitting. Stapling is not permitted. Explosive driven fastenings are not permitted
  2. Wood screws to be particleboard or twinfast screws of lengths and gauges recommended by the medium density fibre board manufacturer. Drill pilot holes for all screws.
  3. Masonry anchors to be an approved patent expansion type.
  4. Mechanical joints to be approved patent mechanical fastener.
  5. Plugs in masonry to be dry winding softwood, or plastic plugs of an approved type
J.

Adhesives:

Use adhesives of approved types sufficient to transmit the loads and stresses imposed and ensure the rigidity of the assembly. Prevent adhesives from staining surfaces specified to have clear or transparent finishes

K.

Hardware:

Generally, all hinges, adjustable shelf support, castors, drawer runners, sliding door tracks, floor glides, and any other hardware necessary to complete the joinery shall be first quality and suitable for their intended use and clearly shown on the Shop Drawings and incorporated in prototypes for approval.

  1. Hinges: One pair per door leaf suitable for bi-folding doors to be all metal 170° concealed hinges.
  2. Handles: One per door, 300mm long D handle of solid nylon.
  3. Mount handles as shown on the Drawings.
  4. Bi-fold door control arm: One per 2 Leaf door, nylon and coated steel.
  5. Adjustable shelves supported on brass shelf supports with brass sleeves, spaced at 64mm centres.
  6. Drawer runners: White epoxy coated steel sections with nylon rollers.
  7. Movable furniture glides: Plastic Studs, 4 per unit.
  8. Balance bench bearings: Pure rubber elastomeric bearings 10mm thick x 30mm square, four per balance bench top. The 30mm may vary with the plan dimension of the bench top so that the rubber bearing walls 'bulge'.

Fabrication (Shop Fabrication)

1.

Provide fixtures and furniture as shown on the Drawings, made up from components as specified.

Construct by trenching, clamped and glued.

A dry-stapled butt jointed or knock-down assembly will not be approved.

Fabricate bench tops as indicated in a manner recommended by the material's manufacturer. Fabricate units without joins unless counter length exceeds maximum available length of materials.

Bench frames shall be manufactured in a square and lateral plane and be true to size as specified on drawings.

Install polypropelene sinks, as recommended by the manufacturer.

Cut out for electrical service outlets and hydraulic service pipes and stop cocks under benches.

Cut out for bench water units. Locate openings accurately using templates or roughing-in diagrams for proper size and shape. Smooth edges of cut-outs and where located in bench tops and similar exposures, seal edges of cut-outs with a water resistant coating.

Provide blockout sections where shown on the drawings for ductwork which extends to bench level, conceal ducts by boxing in.

Conceal fastenings where possible, sink the heads below the surface and fill flush by an approved means to match the finished surface.

Scribe internal and mitre external joint. Scribe fixtures wherever possible to fit against abutting finished surfaces.

2.

Fit all hardware after necessary trenching and polyurethane coating.

3.

Facings:

Refer laboratory plan for locations.

Polymeric sheet:

Fix to continuous flooring grade particle board substrate on site with adhesive applied in accodance with the manufacturer's materials and recommendations.

Location:

To benchtop, integral splashback with internal corner radiused 5mm, square cut sides and front edge radiused 2mm.

High density fibre board:

Fix in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Location: to benchtop, square cut or bull nose front edge, square cut ends.

Laminated Plastic Sheet:

Fix to continuous HMR particleboard substrate with spray applied contact cement containing heat resistant additive to AS 21 31, in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. For small areas (eg edges) hand applied adhesive as above may be used.

Location:

To benchtop, integral splashback, square cut sides and bull nose post formed front edge.

4.

Stainless Steel Benchtops:

The stainless steel is to have 18mm 'A' bond water proof plywood adhesive fixed to underside and sealed and coated with polyurethane sealant. Exposed sides to be square cut and faced with stainless steel returned to underside of bench top min. 50mm.

Internal corners to be radiused.

Joints:

Fit carefully and weld using electrodes of correct type and matching colour. Anneal after welding where necessary. Grind off flush with adjacent surfaces, or to a neat rounded shape at angled junctions, in surfaces which will be visible in the completed installation. Finish to match the surface of the unit.
